With Tiger, Phil, and Retief extending their vacations, we've got five top tier players in the Mercedes Championship field this week: Vijay Singh, Sergio Garcia, Jim Furyk, Kenny Perry, and David Toms. On the issue of top players bowing out of the event, I don't see a need to add another 2 cents to the pot. Both sides have meritable points and that's that. Tiger's absence should allow Vijay to narrow that large gap. If Vijay wins, I may even be able to revoke the Tiger Rule. We shall see. The other gap we will likely see narrow this week is the one between Furyk and Garcia. Furyk has some drag points to shed from the '04 Mercedes, but Garcia doesn't. Furyk is working with new clubs. Garcia should be a little more adjusted to his club changes made right before the Tour Championship. We'll see if that has any effect. The small field should ensure Perry and Toms stay in the top tiers.
Golfer to watch this week: Jim Furyk, on whom The Scotsman's John Huggan wrote this fine piece after Furyk's win in South Africa last month.
